Structure of the MJDF
The MJDF consists of a portfolio of workplace-based evidence, and a Part 1 and Part 2 examination. Candidates will normally be allowed a maximum of five years in which to complete all parts, but will need to pass Part 1 before progressing to Part 2. The Portfolio of Evidence may be completed at any point during the five-year period.
Portfolio of Evidence
This will assess aspects of knowledge, application of knowledge, and provide workplace-based assessment of competencies across the foundation training curriculum. Completion will be a requirement for the award of the qualification. The Portfolio consists of five parts:
- Evidence of five core clinical and professional skills drawn from the candidates foundation training environment
- Evidence of clinical management through presentation of both:
- a clinical audit or research project, and
- a clinical case, case-based discussion or equivalent
- A curriculum vitae
- A record of continuing professional development activity and a personal development plan.

How is the Portfolio of Evidence assessed?
From January 2008, the onus is on the local assessment of the Portfolio of Evidence. The Guide to the Local Assessment of the MJDF Portfolio of Evidence provides information on how this works.

Part 1 examination
Part 1 will consist of one paper, based on the foundation training curriculum, assessing knowledge and applied knowledge. This will include different formats of multiple choice questions (MCQ) and multiple short answer questions in the form of extending matching question (EMQ). The paper will be up to three hours in duration.

Part 2 examination
Part 2 will be in the form of an objective structured clinical examination (OSCE) and structured clinical reasoning (SCR) exercise.
Candidates will undertake the OSCE component and the SCR component in two separate examination circuits held on the same day. Each component will take around 2 hours.
The OSCE component
The OSCE component of Part 2 is aimed at assessing the philosophy guiding the candidates practice, as well as their competence and application of knowledge.
There will normally be around 16 OSCE stations of 5-minutes duration each, where a candidate will be asked to complete a practical task or a paper-based exercise that is linked to a competency within one of the four domains of the GPT curriculum. There will be sufficient rest stations resulting in a circuit time of approximately two hours.
The SCR component
Structured clinical reasoning is an assessment of the candidates ability to communicate with peers, reason, evaluate, form opinion and apply knowledge obtained through undergraduate and postgraduate experience to current dental practice. It is not primarily an assessment of recall or knowledge, although these elements are required to undertake SCR.
Scenarios will be drawn from real clinical situations and will test and integrate major competencies and supporting competencies across all parts of the foundation training curriculum.
Examples of scenarios that may be used include:
- Interpreting the implications of a new guideline
- Review of important documents, leaflets, research papers which impact on dental practice
- Decision making on the merits of a particular form of treatment
- Answering a query or complaint from a patient
- Dealing with treatment complications
- Continuing professional development, e.g. staff and patient management and regulations, resources, policy, etc
- A treatment-planning exercise.
Candidates should maintain an awareness of current dental issues for the SCR assessment. They should keep up to date with recent publications and maintain an awareness of changes in practice and guidance that have featured in the dental press.
SCR format
Candidates will be allowed 1 hour to consider background material to the scenarios. Candidates are advised to spent equal amounts of preparation time on each of the scenarios as they will carry equal marks. This will be followed by five 10-minute structured discussions with two different examiners on each occasion on selected aspects of each scenario.

Transition arrangements for MFGDP(UK) and MFDS candidates
Candidates should read carefully the section of the regulations dealing with transition arrangements at (paragraph 10). These detail how components of MFDS and MFGDP(UK) that have already been completed may be counted towards completion of MJDF.

MJDF examination and submission dates
UK diets of the MJDF examination will normally take place as follows:
- Part 1: End of March/beginning of April and the beginning of October each year
- Part 2: End of May/beginning of June and late November each year
Candidates are able to apply for the MJDF Part 2 examination before they know the result of Part 1. Candidates will have their Part 2 application form (with no money taken) returned to them if they are unsuccessful in Part 1.
The dates below will be updated as further dates are confirmed.

Please be advised that the June MJDF Part 2 examination is no longer being held at Mary Ward House and will take place at the following venues in London for the days stated:

Tuesday 10 June - The Royal College of Surgeons of England
Wednesday 11 June - Congress Centre
Candidates will have received confirmation of this by post and email. Examination times remain the same.
MJDF revision days
The FGDP(UK) and FDS are running a series of revision days leading up to the new examination. It is important to note that these revision days would still be useful for candidates intending to complete the MFGDP(UK)/MFDS examinations.

Faculty tutor networks
Both faculties have networks of tutors to assist those preparing for the MJDF assessment. Historically, these networks have been separate for both MFDS and MFGDP(UK). Increasingly, the activities of these two separate networks will be combined to provide joint teaching for the MJDF.
